The New Allergy-Buster: Chirokinetics Explained

Published in 'Here's Health' - August 2001

This cutting edge therapy combines muscle testing with chiropractic techniques in a revolutionary new treatment which is being used to help banish allergies and boost the immune system. By Frances Ive

According to the traditional Chinese Medicine, many illnesses are caused by a blockage in energy flow. These blockages can cause illnesses and can also manifest as allergies and intolerances to substances such as dust, wheat, coffee, nuts, strawberries, dairy products and animal hair.
Chirokinetics is a new therapy which aims to clear energy blocks and support the immune system so that these conditions are eliminated. What makes it so different is that it claims to be able to actually ‘cure’ allergies, enabling those people who’ve experienced strong reactions to introduce the substances back into their lives.

What is Chirokinetics?

Chirokinetics is a fusion of techniques taken from chiropractic, kinesiology and naturopathy devised by chiropractor David Stevens. It aims to tap into the nervous system and rebalance it so that energy blocks clear and the body can heal.
What is different about chirokinetics is that the healing can be almost immediate in some people, with just one or two sessions required before the allergy is gone.
‘It doesn’t matter what the blocks are – it could be emotional stress or a physical substance like coffee which is stressing the immune system,’ says David. ‘I support the immune system by removing the obstructions which are causing it to become imbalanced.’
David designed the therapy to help with allergies after spending years researching the effects of severe allergies, particularly in children. He knew that using chiropractic manipulation could have some influence on allergies but that it needed refining.
‘I’ve combined the muscle testing of kinesiology with the manipulations of chiropractic’, he says. ‘Instead of giving up all the foods they are allergic to, or avoiding certain substances, chirokinetics enables people to tolerate them.’

What does it involve?

At a typical session, you lie on a couch, fully clothed, and the practitioner tests the muscles for allergies by asking you to hold the right arm into the body, while holding a phial containing an allergen in the other hand. Whether or not you can match the practitioner’s pressure on the arm shows if there is an allergy to the substance. It differs from the method used in kinesiology in that, rather than trying to overpower the muscle it is simply used as a way for the body to tell the therapist where the weaknesses lie. It also differs in that kinesiology is a diagnostic tool which can detect the allergies, but chirokinetics can actually treat them.
Not only is the practitioner looking for allergies but they are also discovering where the energy blocks occur – although the specific location is not of primary importance as it works on the nervous system which affects every system and organ in the body.
Having been through the whole range of possible allergens, a chiropractic manipulation – which feels like a flicking motion – is performed either on the head or on part of the spine to access the nervous system. This rebalances the nervous system, which is responsible for the health of the immune system. The key is to find the precise access point for that person and then make a single adjustment. The principle is that less is more, and one activation should be enough. Once the immune system is restored to optimum health, the allergies should then ease.

Supporting cancer care

Chirokinetics has been helpful for cancer patients by supporting the immune system, helping them to deal with often aggressive forms of treatment.
The body naturally provides tissues with oxygen and recognises and destroys cells capable of forming tumours. David believes that, if this is not happening, it means there are obstructions in the system which prevent the body performing these tasks adequately.
‘Cancer cells need to control their own environments so that they can exist, and they thrive where there is no oxygen,’ he says. ‘They also need to avoid being recognised and destroyed by the body’s immune system. So supporting the immune system and removing energy blocks may enable the body to recognise and destroy cells capable of supporting a tumour.’
Symptoms which are due to allergies and intolerances also ease considerably in people with cancer. This can be particularly beneficial if someone has a low tolerance level to treatments like chemotherapy. Chirokinetics can help the body to heal and stop displaying distressing symptoms, which considerably improves patients’ quality of life.

Finding a practitioner

Chirokinetics is a young therapy with no formal association as yet. David is training new therapists who are largely qualified chiropractors and osteopaths. Details of other practitioners can be provided by the Vital Body Clinic where David practises (see below) or by the Complementary Medical Association – call 020 8305 9571.
Further information: David Stevens practises in Surrey (01372 370 043), dial up www.vitalbodyclinic.co.uk and Harley Street, London (020 7467 8446). A session starts at £59 and lasts from 30 minutes to an hour. A course of four is usually recommended.

‘Healing was instant’

PETER DUNNE, 37, A FILM EXECUTIVE HAD ASTHMA AND HAY FEVER FROM THE AGE OF 15.
‘Sneezing, a blocked nose and runny eyes were regular problems and I was given inhalers and other drugs over the years. One summer, I broke out in eczema with scabs all over my body and I decided it was time for an allergy test.
‘David Stevens did extensive tests and found that I was allergic to numerous things. I expected to be sent away with a list of foods I couldn’t eat, but I wasn’t. David tapped my spine and it felt like he was flicking his fingers between my vertebrae. Virtually overnight there was a difference. I could eat whatever I liked and I didn’t get hay fever. I see David regularly to maintain my health, because I travel a lot and get jet lagged and run down.’

‘My constant stomach pain has disappeared’

AFTER MANY YEARS OF ECZEMA AND ASTHMA, ALISON RUSSELL REACHED THE END OF HER TETHER.
‘I was allergic to eggs and one day I had such a bad reaction that my face and lips swelled up and I had to have my earrings taken out. It was the final straw and I decided to visit an allergy clinic. The list of foods I was told I’d have to give up for the rest of my life included sugar, wheat, dairy products, eggs, coffee and tea.
‘I heard that chirokinetics could stop me being allergic to these things and I would be able to eat them again. When I visited David Stevens, he manipulated my back. It was like a flicking motion and it didn’t hurt at all. The next day I noticed my energy levels had increased and I had a spring in my step. The stomach pain I’d had for most of my life was gone. Chirokinetics has changed my life.’
